Ideal body weight is achievable only by learning about your body and your food, then changing the way you think. But here are some tips that can help you as you embark on your learning journey.

SERVING SIZE Smaller portions — we have to learn what a serving size is. One serving of meat, 3-4 ounces, fits in your palm, not on a serving platter.

SECONDS What's a sure fire way to not eat more calories? Don't eat more food. Stick to one helping. Period.

SWEETS Your tongue loves them. Your waistline doesn't. Sweets are calorie-dense, nutrient-poor, high-carb:fiber-ratio, blood-sugar-spiking balls of evil. Avoid them altogether. Except for 1 treat on Sundays. Just 'cuz.

SLOW DOWN Remember how your brain is a little behind the times? The slower you eat, the sooner it will catch up and help you avoid overeating. Put your fork down. Have a conversation.

SEVEN FIFTY NINE PM Our way of saying don't eat before bed. Your body needs energy at night and will digest your fat if you have an empty stomach. But if you eat even four grapes before bed? It will use those instead of burning fat.

SNACKS We don't want you going to dinner starving, so halfway between lunch and dinner, have a healthy 50–100 calorie snack. It will help cut down overeating at dinner time.
